A plunge of very cold arctic air sweeps down across the UK during the next 24 hours. Heavy snow showers develop in northeastern Britain today and tonight there could be a little snow in parts of the south as a cold front pushes southwards. The wintry theme continues in the coming days and the risk of snow becomes more widespread at times. Tonight the showery rain and snow reaches the south. Over high ground a covering of snow is possible, but amounts are likely to be small. In areas to the north a widespread and severe frost develops. Snow showers continue in coastal counties and northern Scotland.
Tomorrow morning the remnants of the rain and snow in the south clear. Many places then have a dry and bright day. However, there will be further heavy snow showers in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and eastern coastal counties. A few may push inland across East Anglia. Cold or very cold.
Forecast details for Wednesday are very uncertain. There is a risk of rain, sleet and snow pushing into southern England and Wales. To the south of London transient accumulations of snow are possible. Central and northern regions probably remain cold and mostly dry, although isolated snow showers are likely. Very cold.
During Thursday outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow push across England and Wales. A period of snow is considered most likely in central and northern regions. Over high ground in Wales there may be significant accumulations. Showery conditions follow from the west and temperatures rise a little. In the north it stays very cold and snow showers continue to pepper northern Scotland.
Forecast details for Friday are uncertain. However, computer models are suggesting the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds in southern and central regions. In the north there may be heavy and disruptive periods of snow.
