The heatwave affecting much of the UK continues today, with temperatures likely reach higher levels than yesterday. In the south 35°C is possible, and tomorrow is likely to be even hotter. However, the peak of the heat will probably occur on Thursday.

14 day video weather forecast

Very hot in southern and central areas

Sunny periods develop widely today, but a few isolated thunderstorms are possible. In the north it becomes very warm, whilst southern and central areas will be very hot and humid. The existing June temperature record could be challenged.

Widespread rain in the south overnight is likely to act as a cap on maximum temperatures today, as much of the sun's energy will be used to evaporate moisture rather than heat the ground, and cloud cover could bubble up at times. Therefore, the highest values being modelled, around 37°C to 38°C, now seem unlikely to be reached. The temperature range across the UK will probably be from 22°C in the far north west to 34°C or 35°C in the south.

Tomorrow:
Conditions will be similar to today. The exceptions could be western parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where thicker cloud may bring some patchy rain. It remains very warm in the north, and very hot in southern and central areas. Once again the June temperature record could be threatened.

Thursday: Outbreaks of rain are possible in western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Elsewhere another dry day is expected, and it becomes very hot in southern and central areas. Maximum temperatures will be dependent on the extent of cloud cover, but many computer models suggest the heat will peak.

Outlook: Central and eastern counties could be very hot again on Friday, but in the west temperatures start to dip. In the following days the heat will abate, although low 30s could still be reached on Saturday. Sharp thundery bursts of rain are possible, mainly in the west and north.
