After a very mild first half of November there will be a much more wintry feel to the weather this week. Snow is likely in places, mostly over high ground in the north, although the risk may become more widespread for a time. By the weekend temperatures are expected to be recovering.

Most of the UK has a dry and bright day, although there will be showers near the east coast and in northern Scotland where they fall as sleet or snow. It will feel colder in the south than it has in recent days.

Tonight:Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow push into the northwest of the UK. Snow is most likely over high ground in Scotland where significant accumulations are possible. Other areas have a dry night with frost developing widely.

Tomorrow:Showery spells of rain steadily extend southeastwards, with further snow over high ground in Scotland and possibly northern England. Cold across most of the UK, although temperatures in the southwest will be close to the seasonal average.

Wednesday: Outbreaks of rain, and possibly sleet, steadily clear southeastwards. Brighter conditions follow, but wintry showers develop in coastal counties and northern Scotland. It will be windy, especially in eastern coastal areas. Cold.
Outlook: A cold northerly flow will cover all areas on Thursday. Wintry showers are most likely in northern and eastern regions, and frost develops widely overnight. Through Friday and the weekend more changeable conditions are likely to return from the west. Initially, there could be a period of sleet or snow over high ground in northern Britain.
