Heavy rain resulting from Storm Claudia in southern and central areas brings the potential for flooding and travel disruption today. It will also be very windy, especially in western and northwestern England, as well as Wales. The wet conditions clear this weekend and turns colder.

Outbreaks of rain in southern Britain slowly push into central areas, with their northern extent this afternoon likely to be Lancashire and Yorkshire. Rain will be heavy and persistent, leading to flooding in central areas. In much of the south it should become drier this afternoon. It will also be very windy, especially in western and northwestern England, as well as Wales. Gusts of around 70 mph are possible in places. Areas to the north will have a mainly dry day, although there will be scattered showers which turn increasingly wintry in Scotland.
Temperatures range from 3°C in northern Scotland to 16°C in the south. There will be a steep temperature gradient in central areas where the cold and mild air masses meet. Check the recently upgraded weather radar for the most up-to-date view.

Tonight:Outbreaks of heavy rain continue in central Britain, and further downpours could develop in the south for a time. By morning the rain starts to become more fragmented, but some heavy bursts are still likely. The north will have a dry night, and in Scotland a widespread frost develops.

Tomorrow:The rain in the southern half of the UK continues to become lighter and winds ease. In the north it will be mostly dry, with the sunniest conditions in Scotland. Temperatures similar to today's.

Sunday: Brighter and colder conditions steadily push southwards, but in the south it is expected to remain overcast for much of the day, with showery rain possible in the southeast and East Anglia. In the north there will be scattered wintry showers. A widespread frost develops overnight.
Outlook: During the next few days a good deal of dry and chilly weather is forecast. Wintry showers are likely in the north and along coastal counties. There is a risk of longer spells of rain, sleet and snow pushing southeastwards through the middle of the week. Night frosts develop quite widely.
