The unsettled weather will continue in the short term. Rain affects parts of the north today, and tomorrow it’s the turn of southern and central Britain, where flooding and disruption are likely. In some places, a month’s worth of rain could fall. The wet conditions will clear this weekend, and it will turn colder.

Steep temperature gradient

Outbreaks of rain affect northern England, Northern Ireland and the southern half of Scotland, where they are likely to fall as snow at times on their northern edge. Elsewhere it will be mostly dry, but in the afternoon heavy rain begins to push into the south. Windy in the north west.

There will be a steep temperature gradient, with the wet area in the north marking the boundary between cold and mild air masses. Temperatures range from 5°C in the north to 16°C in the south east. Check the recently upgraded weather radar for the most up-to-date view.

Tonight:
Outbreaks of rain, varying in intensity, push northwards across southern and central Britain. The wet weather in the north steadily fades away, leaving dry conditions elsewhere, although a few wintry showers are likely in Scotland. Temperatures dip below 0°C in the far north, but in southern and central Britain they remain in double figures.

Tomorrow:
Heavy rain slowly moves northwards across England and Wales, probably reaching Yorkshire and Lancashire in the afternoon. Flooding could become an issue in some western areas. It will also become very windy, with gusts of 60 to 70mph possible in some central and western parts of Britain, according to computer models. Areas further north will have a mainly dry, bright and rather cold day, although scattered wintry showers are likely in Scotland.
