Is a heatwave on the horizon?

A quiet day in early June. Posted by Brian Gaze

The unsettled theme will continue in the coming days, and as a result temperatures will be nothing to write home about. There is speculation that much warmer weather is on the way as we head towards the middle of the month. Is it likely? There is a signal from computer models for temperatures to rise, but it's far too early to be confident about by how much and whether a heatwave could develop.

14 day video weather forecast Showers

Heavy rain clearing eastwards

Outbreaks of rain push eastwards across much of Northern Ireland, Wales, and England. Brighter conditions steadily return from the west, but showers develop. Scotland has a mix of sunny spells and showers throughout the day.

Temperatures range from 9°C in the far northwest to 18°C in southern and central counties. Check the newly upgraded weather radar for the most up-to-date view.

The seasonal forecast update covering the next 3 months has been issued. The headline is for a warmer and drier summer than average, but large variations in amounts of rain are expected.

Tonight: An area of rain may clip the far south and southeast for a time. Elsewhere clear periods develop, but there will be further showers too.

Tomorrow: All areas have showers, but there should be a reasonable amount of brightness as well. In the west showers are likely to be heavy, and later in the day more persistent spells of rain could push into the southwest. Temperatures will be similar to recent days.

Warmer and drier next week?

The changeable theme continues this weekend. Showers affect much of the UK on Saturday, probably becoming heavy and thundery in southern and central Britain. On Sunday dry and sunny periods develop more widely.

Forecast confidence for next week is low. There is a signal from computer models for drier and much warmer conditions to develop. However, it is still far from certain and a more changeable pattern could win out.
