The meteorological winter starts with cold weather, but in much of the UK it is dry. The cold conditions continue tomorrow, but by Sunday things start to become more mixed. Next week milder air begins returning from the west, but there is uncertainty about how quickly it will progress northwards and eastwards. The winter forecast will be issued today. (If you would like to browse the website without adverts and contribute to its ongoing development, explore the payment options, see below)

Weather forecast discussion

Issued 1st December 2023

Friday starts with wintry showers in coastal counties. However, in most of the UK it is dry and there has been a widespread frost.

Through the day there will be further showers. Most of them will be in coastal counties, but a few push inland. In the east many of them will be wintry and accumulations of snow are possible in the north east, particularly over higher ground. Despite that, it will be a dry and bright day in most of the UK.

Cold generally with temperatures ranging from 3°C in Scotland to 5°C. You can check the rain radar for the most up to date view.

Tonight, wintry showers in the east steadily fade away, but in the west they continue and some will be heavy. In southern Scotland and north western England there could be accumulations of snow in places. Very cold with a widespread frost, in the north it will be severe in places.

Tomorrow, wintry showers affect western counties and some of them could be heavy. Snow is most likely over high ground. Elsewhere, it will be another dry, bright and cold day.

Becoming more changeable

During Sunday patchy outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow are possible in southern and central counties for a time. They should clear eastwards to leave dry conditions in most areas, but showers continue in coastal counties. Cold.

During Monday the likelihood of wet conditions in southern Britain is quite high, and it could still be cold enough for sleet or wet snow over high ground. Areas to the north should be dry and bright, with frost early and late.

Forecast details for Tuesday are uncertain. However, much of the UK probably has a dry and quite cold day.
