Halloween has arrived but the real horror is likely to be in the days which follow it. The unsettled theme continues today with showers or longer spells of rain in places. However, things really step up a gear tomorrow night as Storm Ciarán arrives. It brings the expectation of disruption due to heavy rain and strong winds. Most computer models continue to show the strongest gusts near to the south coast, but some are extending very windy conditions northwards towards the Greater London and home counties areas. Issued 31st October 2023
Tuesday begins dry in Scotland. In the rest of the UK it is a mixed picture, with some heavy bursts of rain in places.
This morning, the heaviest and most persistent rain becomes focused on eastern England. Scotland remains dry, but in other areas there will be showers and some bright intervals. This afternoon very heavy and persistent outbreaks of rain push into south western Britain.
Temperatures range from a raw 6°C in Scotland to a mild 15°C in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight, heavy showery outbreaks of rain push northeastwards across much of the UK, although it probably remains dry in the far north. Over the Scottish mountains a period of sleet and snow is likely. Very windy in the north west and the far south east.
Tomorrow, outbreaks of rain keep pushing northwards and there will be further snow over the Scottish mountains for a time. The rain will be heavy at times, and with the ground already saturated, there is a risk of further flooding. Brighter and showery conditions follow into much of the UK during the morning, but the wet conditions continue well into the afternoon in Scotland. Quite windy.
During Wednesday night and Thursday, Storm Ciarán is expected to bring severe weather to parts of the UK. Heavy rain extends across much of England and Wales initially and then into Scotland later. Further flooding is expected. Forecast details remain uncertain, but the strongest winds currently look like they will be to the south of London and particularly in southern coastal counties. However, a minority of computer model runs are forecasting wind gusts of around 70mph, even in the Greater London and home counties areas. Keep up to date with short range forecasts because it may not be until Wednesday when the exact track of the low pressure is pinned down, and even a difference of 50 to 100 miles will make a huge difference to local conditions.
The unsettled theme continues on Friday. Showers or longer outbreaks of rain are forecast across the UK, and it remains windy.
Another area of heavy rain is likely to push northwards across the southern half of the UK through Friday night and Saturday morning. A mix of sunny spells and heavy showers follow it.
