The quiet spell of weather will continue during the next few days, with rain largely confined to the north. After a mild start, temperatures are expected to dip, particularly in central and eastern counties. In the longer term there are signs of high pressure building over Scandinavia. Tonight it remains wet in the far north. In other areas it will will be dry and in some places clear periods lead to frost forming.
Tomorrow is forecast to be another dry day in virtually the whole of the UK, with the far north again being the exception. Cloud amounts vary and temperatures are likely to be a little lower than today's.
UK Met UKV, Thursday 16th January [Tap animation to toggle cities]
The next few days will bring mostly dry weather, although patchy outbreaks of rain are likely at times in the north and possibly later in the west as well. Temperatures in central and eastern areas are expected to dip, potentially becoming rather cold, with an increasing risk of frost and fog. In the west it remains milder.
In the longer term, computer models suggest a low but not negligible chance of high pressure building over Scandinavia, with a cold easterly flow pushing across western Europe and reaching the United Kingdom. While the depth of cold pooling to the east indicates it would not be as severe as the 2018 spell, it could still bring a renewed risk of snow.
