Most of the UK will have another dry, bright and cold day. This weekend a change takes place as an area of low pressure moves up from the southwest. A band of rain will push northeastwards, and a period of snow is likely on its leading edge. Significant accumulations of snow are expected, particularly in central and northern areas. However, with milder air returning, snow in southern and central regions will turn back to rain. (If you would like to browse the website without adverts and access premium features, see below)

UK Met UKV, Friday 3rd January [Tap animation to toggle cities]
Tonight the risk of wintry showers will be greatest in north western England and the western half of Scotland. A widespread frost develops in much of the UK.
Tomorrow, the wintry showers in the north west fade away. In the morning outbreaks of rain push into south western England, and on their leading edge a period of snow is likely. Through the second half of the day outbreaks of sleet and snow spread northeastwards across much of England and Wales. Disruptive amounts of snow are likely in places, but in the south milder air begins to return and the snow turns back to rain. Very cold.
UK Met UKV, Saturday 4th January [Tap animation to toggle cities]
During Sunday outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow continue pushing northwards. Snow increasingly becomes confined to northern England and Scotland. In southern and central regions there will be showery spells of rain, likely to be heavy in places. It will be much milder than recently.
Early next week colder air returns southwards. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are possible initially, but brighter and showery conditions quickly return. The showers will be wintry with snow falling to low levels in the north. Frosts probably become widespread.
