The winter was mild and almost completely snowless in much of the UK; however, the meteorological spring is starting today with rather cold weather. Showers and longer spells of rain spread northwards, and over high ground sleet or snow is likely. (If you would like to browse the website without adverts and contribute to its ongoing development, explore the payment options, see below)

Weather forecast discussion

Issued 1st March 2024

Friday starts with outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow in much of south western Britain and Northern Ireland. Elsewhere it is dry and there has been a widespread frost in the north.

Through the day, the wet weather gradually extends northwards, with showery conditions returning to southern and central Britain. Over high ground sleet or snow is possible, but accumulations are likely to be reserved for elevations over about 200m in the Welsh mountains, the Peak District and the Pennines. Scotland has sunny spells, but wintry showers pepper the north. Also, it should turn drier in Northern Ireland. Quite windy.

Cold. Temperatures range from 4°C to 7°C in the south east. You can check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

Tonight it remains very mixed. Outbreaks of rain and hill snow push northwards into Scotland. Elsewhere, there will be showers, but also clear periods which allow temperatures to drop and a frost to develop in places. Later on, more persistent spells of rain and hill snow may return to central and eastern England.

Tomorrow will be rather cold. Showery spells of rain, sleet and hill snow spread northwards across eastern Britain. In other areas there will be sunny spells and showers.

Changeable outlook

Sunday brings sunny spells and although there will be showers they are likely to be more scattered than recently. Nonetheless, they could still have a wintry flavour over high ground. Rather cold.

During Monday a band of rain steadily pushes northeastwards. Over the Pennines the rain could be preceded by a period of sleet and snow. Scotland probably remains dry, bright and cold.

Tuesday is expected to be showery in much of the UK. However, there could be longer spells of rain in the north east.
