Storm Austen. Posted by Brian Gaze

Stormy Friday

The core of Storm Austen pushes eastwards just to the south of the UK. It will lead to a very unsettled day, with showers and longer outbreaks of rain affecting most of the UK, at least for a time. This afternoon it starts turning drier in the west. Winds will cause disruption, with the strongest gusts initially in the south west before transferring eastwards to southern coastal counties. It also becomes windy inland across Wales and England. Snow is possible over the higher parts of the Scottish mountains.

Temperatures range from 7°C to 13°C, with the higher values in eastern England. Check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

Tomorrow: Many places have a dry start, but there will be heavy outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland. These quickly spread eastwards across all parts of the UK, bringing a very wet afternoon. However, showery conditions begin returning to the north west of the UK. Windy, particularly in the north where gusts of over 70mph are possible in coastal locations.

Sunday: Heavy outbreaks of rain affect much of Scotland, slowly clearing northwards. In other northern and central areas there will be a mix of sunny spells and showers. The south has a mostly dry and bright day. Windy, particularly in the north where gales or severe gales are likely.

Outlook: The unsettled weather is likely to continue into early next week, but in the longer term, there are signs of high pressure having more influence in the south. This would lead to a greater chance of dry periods, particularly in southern areas.
