Much of the UK has a dry and cold day, but there will be outbreaks of rain and snow in Scotland. During the weekend a big change takes place as milder air returns from the Atlantic. Computer models are signalling weather and disruption is possible in parts of the UK. (If you would like to browse the website without adverts and contribute to its ongoing development, explore the payment options, see below)

Friday begins with outbreaks of sleet and snow in northern and western Scotland. Elsewhere it is dry and there has been a widespread frost.

Through the day outbreaks of snow in Scotland increasingly turn to sleet or rain at low levels. In the rest of the UK it remains dry and bright.

Cold, but temperatures will be a little higher than recently, particularly in the north. Values range from 3°C  to 6°C. You can check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

UK Met Office UKV, rain and snow, 15:00 Friday 19th January

Tonight, outbreaks of rain spread across much of the north and west. In other areas it remains dry, but away from the south east, strengthening winds reduce the likelihood of frost.

Tomorrow wet and windy conditions affect much of the north and west, and gales are probable in coastal counties. Central and eastern areas should stay dry. It will be milder than recently in the north and west, but in the south and east it stays raw.

Batten down the hatches

Sunday is looking stormy in much of the UK. The north and west are expected to bear the brunt, with computer models suggesting wind gusts speeds of over 70mph in places. Even in the south, gusts of over 50mph are being signalled. Heavy outbreaks of rain affect the north and west, but in other areas they will be patchier.

Monday probably brings brighter conditions. Winds may ease, although gales remain a risk, particularly in the north. Quite mild.

Tuesday is looking very unsettled. A band of rain spreads eastwards and gales or severe gales are possible. Mild.
