Much of the UK has a showery end to 2023, but in eastern Scotland longer outbreaks of rain continue. The weather remains quite unsettled during the next few days, but there are indications of it turning colder by the end of the week. New Year's Eve starts showery in the south and west. Elsewhere it is mostly dry.
Through the day, showers become widespread and heavy in much of the UK. However, it's a more mixed picture in Scotland, with outbreaks of rain in the east and drier conditions in the west. Windy, especially in southern and western coastal counties where severe gales are possible.

Tonight, heavy showers continue and it will be windy in the southern half of the UK. It will feel cold and over high ground in the north sleet or snow is likely.
New Year's Day is looking mixed. In northern regions scattered showers continue, but there should be a good deal of dry and bright weather. In the south outbreaks of rain are expected to develop and they may become heavy. Later in the day they extend into central Britain. It will feel quite cold, particularly in the wet areas.
Unsettled weather continues on Tuesday. Heavy outbreaks of rain push eastwards across southern and central regions. an area of rain may also affect north eastern Britain for much of the day, and over high ground snow is is possible. Possibly very windy in the south.
Wednesday is looking mixed. Showers are possible in much of the UK and in Scotland longer outbreaks of rain and hill snow are likely. Temperatures shouldn't be too far from the norm.
Thursday is forecast to bring a mix of sunny spells and showers. In the day which follow, a transition to colder and drier conditions may begin to develop.
