October 2008 snow in south England - Part 2 October 2008 brought an exceptional early fall of snow to large parts of southern England. Snow depths of several cm were recorded in the Chilterns and even central London woke up to a covering on the 29th October. Berkhamsted snow scenes Berkhamsted is a historic market town located in the Bulbourne valley of Hertfordshire, England. The town is surrounded by countryside, much of it in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Due to its elevation of approximately 400 to 600 feet and not being part of the urban heat island of Greater London, snow is more common in this area than in London. Berkhamsted woke up to a blanket of snow in October! Temperatures were well below freezing point Regent's Park, London Accumulating snow in central London is quite unusual even in the depths of the winter months. To see it in October is exceptional. Amazingly there was snow in Regents Park in central London too Contrasting with the snow were vivid autumnal colours on the trees Not as much snow as the Chilterns, but still a covering Is it spring, autumn or winter? The snowfall in central London during October was a truly remarkable weather event. It’s not often that snow accumulates on the ground in London at this time of the year, making this occurrence a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
