The rest of the week is expected to be very cold in all of the UK. Snow is most likely in Scotland and coastal counties, although a few snow showers could reach further inland at times. Frosts become severe and in places they persist through the days. Next week forecast uncertainty quickly increases.

Thursday starts with a widespread and sharp frost. In the northern half of Scotland there are heavy snow showers and there are a few scattered around coastal counties.

Through the day snow showers continue in Scotland but they become more scattered and lighter. There is also a risk of showers bringing accumulating snow to north eastern England. Another feature pushes down across Wales and south western England bringing sleet or snow. Other areas have a dry day with sunny periods.

Very cold. Temperatures range from -1C (30F) in Scotland to 6C (43F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the area of snow showers in northern England pushes southwards and fades away, but it could give a covering in places. Further snow showers affect Scotland and possibly Northern Ireland. A widespread frost develops and in places it will be severe. Temperatures could dip to -8C (18F) locally.

Tomorrow is looking dry, bright and very cold in most of the UK. However, sleet or snow showers are expected in Scotland as well as northern, eastern and western coastal counties. Widespread frost early and late, severe in places.

Uncertain outlook next week

Saturday will be another very cold day. Sleet or snow showers may become more widespread in Wales, south western England and the north. However, many places remain dry and bright. Widespread frost early and late, severe in places.

Sunday is looking dry, sunny and very cold, although there could be a scattering of snow showers. Widespread frost early and late, severe in places.

Early next week an area of low pressure approaches from the southwest and weather fronts associated with it bring the potential for snow. However, there is much uncertainty with various scenarios possible. All areas could remain dry and cold. Alternatively, outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow may push across parts of the UK.
