Temperatures in much of the UK struggle to rise above 0C (32F) and a strong easterly wind will add to the bitter cold. Western areas have a good deal of dry weather but in eastern and central regions there will be snow showers and some could give significant accumulations. The freezing spell is set to continue through the coming days with further snow at times.

Very cold period expected
Tomorrow will be another bitterly cold day with maximum temperatures close to or a little below freezing point. Sunny spells develop but there will be snow showers and again they will be most the most frequent in the north and east. Significant accumulations are possible in places.
The very cold conditions continue Wednesday with snow showers in the north and east. There is also a possibility of some longer spells of snow in parts of the south. Daytime temperatures in much of the UK remain at or below freezing point.
Forecast details for the rest of next week are uncertain. During Thursday and Friday milder air may begin to return from the southwest. If that happens there is the risk of a heavy outbreaks of snow spreading northeastwards. The likelihood is the mild air will slipping away southwards leaving most of Britain under the very col air mass. There are growing signs of the cold period being a long one.
