Stormy weather on the way

Central and eastern areas have dry and quiet weather today but rain pushes into the west as a change begins to take place. This weekend Storm Ciara brings heavy rain and gales or severe gales to most of the UK. Some damage and travel disruption is likely. Early next week it turns colder and the risk of snow increases in the north....READ IN FULL

Friday starts dry and there has been quite a widespread frost in central and eastern areas. Through the day it remains dry and bright in the east. Elsewhere cloud builds and patchy outbreaks of rain push into the west of the UK. 

Temperatures this afternoon range from 7C (45F) in the east to 11C (52F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight patchy outbreaks of rain spread eastwards and in the north there could be some heavy bursts mixed in. Clearer and showery conditions follow into northern and western areas. Winds strengthen.

Tomorrow starts dry in much of the country. Through the day wet and very windy weather returns to the north and west as Storm Ciara approaches of the UK.

Meteo France Arpege, rain, 15:00 GMT Fri 7th February

Overnight the rain and strong winds push across all regions. Sunday is expected to be stormy. Heavy rain and strong winds  lead to travel disruption and some damage is possible. Wind gusts will widely be over 50mph and in exposed locations they could exceed 80mph. Computer models are showing gusts of around 70mph in London and much of southern England. 

Colder and unsettled

Colder air filters down from the northwest through Monday. In central and northern regions showers turn increasingly wintry with heavy snow possible over high ground. It remains windy with gales in places.

Tuesday looks cold with a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers. Accumulating snow is possible at low levels in the northern half of the country. Farther south there could be some wet snow over high ground.

The unsettled period continues through the rest of the week and at times it will very windy. In the north it will be cold enough for snow on occasion.
