High pressure for the Christmas period

[Updated 09:10 23/12/2018]

Christmas

Wet weather affects parts of the UK today but a change is on the way. Through the Christmas period high pressure builds from the south and it brings mainly settled conditions. Temperatures fluctuate between average and mild for much of the coming week, but there is a chance of patchy frost and fog....READ IN FULL

Sunday is off to a wet start in northern and eastern England. This morning the rain continues in the north but drier conditions return to southern counties and Northern Ireland. During the second half of the day it also turns drier in northern England but further outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across the south. Their northern extent is likely to stretch from south Wales across to the London area. Scotland has a dry and bright day.

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in Scotland to a very mild 13C (55F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the wet weather in southern counties moves away, although it could stay damp in Cornwall and Devon for much of the night. Central and northern areas remain dry and clear spells lead to quite a widespread frost forming.

Buzz

Christmas Eve is looking dry for most of the country but in the south west there could be some patchy rain. Sunny spells develop and temperatures will be a little lower in southern and central regions than recently.

Christmas Day is set to be dry and bright in the east with close to average temperatures. In the west thicker cloud brings the risk of some drizzle and it will be milder.

Settled into the New Year

High pressure is expected to remain centred close to the UK between Christmas and the New Year. It means the dry and quiet weather continues, at least in the southern half of the country. In the north west there is a greater risk of patchy outbreaks of rain at times, but even there it should often be dry. After a mild start temperatures probably dip back down towards the seasonal average.
