Weather prepares to do a U-turn

[Updated 07:10 14/11/2018]

Wintry scene

The next few days will be exceptionally mild for mid November as southwesterly winds bathe the UK. However, a major change in the weather is on the way as high pressure over the continent strengthens and builds northwards towards Scandinavia. That allows a much colder easterly flow to develop next week and there is a chance of showers turning to sleet or snow....READ IN FULL

Wednesday starts with rain in much of the UK but southern England and northern Scotland are dry. The outbreaks of rain steadily spread northeastwards today, but they become lighter and patchier. Southern counties remain bright and by the afternoon it should have turned drier in Wales and the northern half of England. It will be windy, particularly in north west England and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures widely reach 14C (57F) this afternoon and perhaps climb a couple of degrees higher in parts of eastern Scotland. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight patchy rain continues in the north west of the UK. Elsewhere it will be dry but windy in the north and west.

Tomorrow it's a similar picture. The UK remains trapped between low pressure to the west and high pressure to the east. Disturbances from the Atlantic brush the north west of the UK so there will be further spells of rain there but elsewhere it is dry and very mild. Temperatures could peak at 17C (63F).

Major change on the way

By Friday it should be dry in all of the UK as high pressure over the continent becomes more dominant. It remains very mild and in the south afternoon temperatures could peak at close to 18C (64F).

The weekend brings a good deal of fine weather but high pressure will be building northwards into Scandinavia. That leads to cooler air beginning to filter in from the continent and by Sunday it will feel chillier.

Next week it continues to turn colder as an easterly wind becomes established. Showers could start to turn wintry in eastern regions during Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecast details are uncertain but there is the possibility of showers becoming more persistent in the south and it may be cold enough for them to turn to sleet or snow at times.
