Wet and very windy from the west

[Updated 07:08 09/11/2018]

Flood sign

A spell of stormy weather spreads eastwards during the next 24 hours and it is followed by a showery weekend. The mixed theme continues on Monday and Tuesday but by the middle of next week high pressure builds over the near continent. That blocks the Atlantic flow and leaves the UK under an unseasonably mild southerly air stream....READ IN FULL

Friday starts with showery rain in the north and west of Britain. There are some heavy bursts in Scotland but through the morning they become lighter. This afternoon outbreaks of heavy rain push across Northern Ireland and into western Britain. Winds strengthen with gales or severe gales developing in exposed locations. Central and eastern counties stay mainly dry through the day but cloud amounts increase.

Maximum temperatures range from 8C (48F) in Scotland to 13C (55F) in England. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight the wet and windy weather pushes eastwards across all areas. By morning the rain will still be affecting eastern counties but elsewhere showery conditions return.

Tomorrow heavy showers develop over the southern half of the UK and at times they could merge to give longer spells of rain. In the north it should be drier and brighter with showers more scattered.

Sunday sees more of the same as a deep area of low pressure remains anchored to the northwest of the UK. There is a risk of more persistent rain in the south at times.

Warming up next week

Low pressure controls the weather on Monday and Tuesday. That keeps things mixed with showers or possibly longer spells of rain at times.

By Wednesday change starts to take place as high pressure over the continent builds and exerts its influence. Initially that means drier conditions in the south and east of the UK with the north west having further spells of rain. However, the settled weather steadily extends across most of the UK, with the possible exception of the far north west. It also becomes very mild under a southerly flow. Computer models are suggesting temperatures could climb to 17C (63F).
