Persistent rain affect the north west today but elsewhere it will be fine and warm. During the second half of the week more changeable weather is expected to push eastwards. The majority of computer model runs show next week being quite mixed with the brightest and warmest conditions in the south....READ IN FULL

Tuesday is off to a very wet start in the north west of the UK. Through the day rain continues in western, central and northern Scotland but it eases off in Northern Ireland. Eastern Scotland is expected to remain mostly dry. England and Wales have a fine day with sunny periods, the best of which will be in southern and central regions.

Temperatures range from about 10C (50F) in the north to a warm 20C (68F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 2

Tonight the wet weather affecting parts of Scotland slowly pulls away northwards. By the morning it probably only remains in the far north. The rest of the UK has a dry night but patchy fog could form.

Tomorrow all areas have sunny periods. The upper air mass will be almost as warm as it was during the summer heatwaves but the shorter days limit the potential for temperatures to rise. Nonetheless maximum values could reach 24C (75F) to give an Indian Summer feel to the weather.

More changeable later this week

During the first half of Thursday a band of showery rain is expected to push northeastwards across the UK but some warm spells of sunshine develop behind it in the south. Later in the day wet and windy weather spreads into the west of the UK and by the evening it could reach central areas.

On Friday rain affects much of the UK. It will also be windy and severe gales are likely in the north west with gusts in  exposed coastal locations possibly reaching 80mph. South eastern England could stay mainly dry.

This weekend is looking changeable but there is uncertainty about the balance between  high pressure centred over the continent and low pressure areas in the Atlantic. Saturday is expected to be wet in the west but eastern and south eastern areas may be mostly dry. Overnight and into Sunday the rain should clear eastwards to be followed by brighter and showery conditions.

Mixed next week?

At this stage changeable weather is favoured next week. The wettest spells are likely to be in the north west with drier periods more frequent in the south east. Temperatures probably stay be close for much of the period but it could be chilly in the north at times.
