Mostly fine in the south

[Updated 07:30 01/10/2018]

Autumnal colours

September was a slightly warmer then average month measured by the Central England Temperature (CET). However the anomaly of about 0.4°C is the smallest since March when it was -0.9°C. October will start with quiet weather in the south but in the north it remains mixed....READ IN FULL

Monday begins dry and chilly across the UK. This morning most places have sunny spells but cloud builds in northern areas. Through the second half of day wet and windy weather spreads southeastwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Over the Scottish mountains rain turns to snow at times. Southern and central regions remain dry but cloud amounts increase.

Temperatures this afternoon range from 8C (46F) in Scotland to 14C (57F) in southern England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 2

Tonight the rain spreads southeastwards but central and eastern England should miss it. Drier conditions follow on during the second half of the night, although some showery rain is likely in the west. Cloudy skies keep it milder than recent nights.

Tomorrow showery rain in the west fades away to leave a good deal of dry weather. Sunny spells develop in the north and cloud progressively breaks in the south too. All of the country has quite a windy day and in parts of the north gales are likely. The north remains quite chilly but temperatures in the south will be higher than recently.

Another batch of wet and windy pushes eastwards across northern areas on Wednesday. In the south high pressure keeps it dry, bright and warm. Temperatures approach 21C (70F).

Mid term outlook

The rest of the week brings further spells of wet and windy weather to the north. There is the potential for a deep area of low pressure to track close to the north west of the country next weekend but forecast details are uncertain at this stage. In southern and central Britain the focus is on dry periods but there is a chance of patchy outbreaks of rain pushing down from the northwest at times.

Predominantly settled weather may continue through the second week of October in the south. In the north it remains more changeable.
