Showery rain in the north

[Updated 07:20 13/09/2018]

Autumn colours

The next few days bring a lot of dry weather to the south but central and northern regions remain more changeable with wet and windy periods. This weekend temperatures are likely to begin rising in the south and early next week it could become very warm as the remnants of Hurricane Helene approach the UK....READ IN FULL

Thursday is off to a chilly start in southern and central Britain with a touch of ground frost in a few places. In the north there is more cloud and a band of showery rain is affecting much of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Through the rest of the day it stays bright in southern and central regions. In the north showery outbreaks of rain become more widespread and in the west they could turn heavy. It will also be windy.

Temperatures range from 10C (50F) in the north west to 19C (66F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight wet weather continues in Northern Ireland and western Scotland. There could also be some patchy rain in eastern Scotland and other parts of the west but the south remains dry with clear spells.

Tomorrow showery rain affects central and northern regions with the heaviest outbreaks in the west. The south has another dry and bright day. It will be breezy and rather cool generally, although in longer sunny spells it should pleasantly warm.

Mixed weekend

Saturday starts mostly dry but wet and windy weather spreads eastwards across much of the north west during the second half of the day. Southern and eastern areas remain dry and in sunny spells temperatures could be a degree or two higher than recently.

On Sunday outbreaks of rain spread across central and northern areas. The rain is likely to become heavy and be accompanied by strong winds. Southern areas should have a dry day and if sunny spells develop it will be warm.

Hurricane Helene next week

During the early part of next week Hurricane Helene heads across the Atlantic towards the UK, but by the time it approaches us it will no longer be a hurricane. Nonetheless the storm system could have a significant impact on the UK's weather but there uncertainty about how it will interact with the jet stream. Some computer model runs show it pushing up from the southwest and tracking close to the west of Ireland. That could lead to very wet and windy weather in the north west. Further south and east high temperatures are possible due to a combination of tropical air embedded in Helene and very warm air from southern Europe being pulled northwards.
