[Updated 09:00 26/08/2018]

Wet and windy weather spreads eastwards across all areas today. Things improve for Bank Holiday Monday tomorrow and the rest of the week brings a lot of dry weather. By next weekend warm and settled conditions could be returning as high pressure builds....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts with heavy outbreaks of rain in central and western areas, but eastern England is mostly dry. Through the day wet and windy weather pushes eastwards and there will be some very heavy bursts of rain mixed in. In exposed parts of the west and along the south coast winds may gust to gale force at times. This afternoon drier and brighter conditions return to Northern Ireland, Wales and western England, but much of the north and east have more rain.

Under the cloudy it will be a very cold day for the time of year with temperatures peaking at between 10C (50F) in the north and 14C (57F) in the south. The warmest conditions are likely to be in brighter parts of the west this afternoon where 19C (66F) could be reached. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight the rain clears eastwards to leave dry conditions for most but showers continue in the north. It will be quite chilly.

Bank Holiday Monday's weather looks a lot better than today's. Showers affect the north but they become scattered and many places have a reasonable day. It will be quite windy, particularly in the north, but temperatures should be up on today's and in the south 21C (70F) could be reached.

A mixed outlook for next week

Tuesday will be dry and bright in much of the country but cloud and rain spread into the north west later on. Temperatures continue to recover and in the south they approach 24C (75F).

During Wednesday patchy outbreaks of rain affect the north but areas to the south probably remain dry and bright. There is a risk of heavy and thundery rain affecting south eastern areas but their northerly and westerly extent is very uncertain. An area of low pressure system will be tracking northeastwards from the Bay of Biscay into the near continent but there is uncertainty about its exact path and its influence on the  weather in the UK.

GFS forecast chart 1

GFS, forecast pressure and precipitation, 13:00 BST Wed 29th August

Through the rest of the week high pressure builds back. That should to a lot of dry weather and by the weekend temperatures could be climbing as very warm air from southern Europe filters northwards towards the UK. In the north west it remains more changeable.
