Rain spreading across the south

[Updated 06:45 24/05/2018]

Rain

The rest of the week is looking mostly fine and warm in the north. In the south it will be more mixed as low pressure deepens over the Bay of Biscay and pushes thundery outbreaks of rain northwards over France and across the English Channel.

Thursday starts wet in parts of the south but elsewhere it dry. Through the day outbreaks of rain in the south move  westwards and at times they will become heavy. Drier and brighter conditions return from the east but by early evening thundery showers may break out in the south east and East Anglia. Central and northern regions have a fine day with spells of warm sunshine.

Maximum temperatures range from 16C (61F) in overcast areas to 24C (75F) in sunny areas. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight thundery bursts of rain push westwards across southern and central areas. The north will be dry and clear.

Tomorrow morning thundery downpours affect southern and central England, as well as Wales. The wet weather slowly edges northwards and it turns brighter in the south. Scotland and Northern Ireland stay warm and sunny.

Bank Holiday weekend warm but mixed

Saturday will be dry and sunny in the north. In the southern half of the UK thundery downpours are likely, especially in Wales, the south west and central southern England. Temperatures in the sunshine reach a warm and humid 25C (77F).

Sunday will be very warm with sunny periods in much of the country, however thunderstorms continue to be a possibility in southern and central counties. The heaviest ones may be in Wales and the south west, but there is a risk in the south eastern corner too.

The details for Bank Holiday Monday are uncertain. Most places should have a warm or even hot day but  thunderstorms remain a possibility.

Warmth continues next week

Showers continue to pepper the south next week but all regions look set to have periods of fine weather. Temperatures remain well above the 30 year average into June.
