[Updated 08:00 29/03/2018]

Unsettled and cold weather is expected through the Easter period. There is a risk of snow in the north and even in the southern half of the UK precipitation could be a wintry mix at times.

Thursday starts with showers in Wales and south western England but elsewhere it is mostly bright and cold. Through the day outbreaks of rain extend northeastwards across much of the country and in the south they become heavy. Over high ground in Scotland snow is likely.

Arpege forecast chart

It will be chilly with maximum temperatures ranging from 5C (41F) in the north to 9C (48F) in the south. See the recently upgraded rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain continues in northern England with snow falling over the hills. Drier conditions develop in the south for a time but showers return later in the night. Clear spells in Scotland lead to a frost.

Good Friday will be mixed. Wet weather in northern England pushes into Northern Ireland and southern Scotland with snow over high ground. In the south outbreaks of rain become persistent and during the afternoon they extend over much of England and Wales. Eastern areas may remain drier.

Cold and unsettled Easter

Saturday looks like bringing further showery rain. There could be some longer dry periods too but temperatures remain disappointing for the time of year.

On Easter Sunday a cold east or southeasterly flow will cover the country. Showers are likely and in the north they could fall as snow down to low levels. There is also a chance of more persistent outbreaks of rain spreading into the south west late in the day.

GFS forecast chart

GFS 00z, surface pressure and precipitation, 16:00 BST Sun 1st April

On Bank Holiday Monday outbreaks of rain are expected to spread northeastwards. As they bump into cold air over central and northern Britain they could turn to snow.

Through the rest of next week it remains unsettled. Central and northern regions probably stay cold. In the south the focus is on wet weather and close to average temperatures.
