[Updated 07:30 06/02/2018]

Tuesday begins with a band of precipitation stretching from south west England to eastern Scotland. In central and northern regions it is falling as snow and accumulations of several cms are expected. In the south west rain is more likely. This morning the outbreaks of sleet and snow slowly pushes southeastwards. In northern areas it brightens up but wintry showers develop.

The forecast chart shows where the snow is expected to be at midday.

This afternoon the sleet and snow becomes lighter and patchier as it moves through central counties. By the early evening it could pep up a little and there is the possibility of a covering of snow in the northern home counties and parts of East Anglia. London could see a few flakes too but it probably won't amount to much.

The forecast chart shows where the snow is expected to be at 10pm this evening.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in much of the country to about 6C (43F) in the far south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

This evening the remnants of the snow clear from southern counties and a severe frost develops. It could turn out to be the coldest night of the winter in parts of the UK, and temperatures in the Scottish glens probably drop below -10C (14F).

Changeable outlook and quite cold

Tomorrow most areas have a cold and sunny day. In the north west cloud builds and outbreaks of rain return later on. Overnight and through Thursday rain spreads eastwards and over high ground in the north it will be cold enough for snow.

Friday will be cold and bright in central and eastern areas. In the west wintry showers develop and in the north west they become heavy and give accumulating snow.

During Saturday wet and windy weather sweeps eastwards and wintry showers follow on from the northwest. Gales are possible and it remains cold enough for snow over high ground. Another spell of wet weather could head southeastwards through Sunday.

Second half of February

Computer models are suggesting a continuation of the chilly and changeable theme as we head through the second half of February. The risk of snow is greatest in northern regions but it could spread southwards on occasion.
