Strong winds, snow and rain tonight

[Updated 07:20 17/01/2018]

Stormy weather

Stormy conditions are expected to spread eastwards across the southern half of the UK tonight. In parts of the north the main problem is likely to be from heavy outbreaks of snow.

Wednesday begins with wintry showers. In the north some of them are heavy and prolonged but in the south they are lighter and more scattered. During the rest of the day sunny spells develop but wintry showers continue with most of them peppering the north and west. Further accumulations of snow are possible, especially over higher ground.

Temperatures range from 3C (37F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) and a wind chill will make it feel very cold. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Strong winds, snow and rain tonight

By the evening wet and windy weather begins pushing into the west. Overnight the rain moves eastwards and in Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland it turns to snow. Further heavy and disruptive falls are possible. In southern and central areas the main concern will be strong winds with widespread gales and severe gales in exposed locations.

The Arpege chart shows where the rain and snow are expected to be at 02:00 GMT tomorrow morning.

Blustery showers tomorrow

Brighter conditions return to all areas tomorrow morning and winds ease. Blustery showers will again develop in the north and west with many of them falling as sleet or snow. Through the afternoon the showers increasingly push eastwards across southern and central counties. The cold and showery theme continues on Friday.

Weekend and beyond

By the weekend the showers become more scattered but it remains chilly. There is a chance of rain affecting the extreme south on Saturday but most of the UK should have plenty of dry and bright weather. Overnight a widespread frost develops. After a bright start on Sunday outbreaks of rain push in from the west and in the north they are likely to be preceded by snow.

Next week is expected to be quite unsettled. Temperatures probably fluctuate around the seasonal average.
