[Updated 07:10 12/01/2018]

Wintry scene

A major change in the weather continues is on the way in the coming days and by early next week all of the UK will be under a cold and showery northwesterly flow. That leads to an increasing likelihood of snow, particularly in the north and over higher ground.

Friday starts drizzly in eastern England but northern and western areas are dry and there is a frost in places. There's also quite a lot of fog around but this morning it will lift in the north and west as winds strength and the afternoon should be quite bright. A few cloud breaks could also develop in the east.

Temperatures range from 4C (39F) in the north to 8C (46F) in the south but it will be cold where fog lingers. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight strong winds and outbreaks of rain spread across western parts of the UK. The east remains mostly dry.

Weekend weather

Tomorrow wet and windy weather in the west gradually spreads into central areas with drier conditions returning to Northern Ireland and into western Britain. Eastern England remains dry but there will be a lot of cloud.

GFS forecast chart

GFS 00z, 12th Jan, precipitation, 18:00 GMT Sat 13th Jan

The rain fades away overnight to leave a good deal of dry weather on Sunday and in the east it should be brighter than recently. During the second half of the day clouds builds across the north west and winds strengthen. By the evening outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland and western Scotland with severe gales possible in the far north west.

Unsettled and quite wintry

Quite an unusual spell of unsettled and rather cold weather is forecast for much of next week. Pressure remains low over continental Europe and with the jet stream tilted northwest to southeast the UK is likely to be sitting under a chilly west to northwesterly air stream. Showers or longer spells of rain affect all areas and at times it could be cold enough for snow. The snow risk is greatest over the northern hills but anywhere north of the M4 corridor could see snow.
