[Updated 08:58 08/01/2018]

Wet weather

In the next few days the UK will be in no-man's land between the cold continental block to the east and the Atlantic flow to the west. During the second half of the week the Atlantic flow is expected to make a gradual but decisive return.

Monday begins dry with a widespread frost in central and northern areas. In the south it is cloudier and less cold. Through the day cloud spreads northwards into central areas and it brings a few spots of rain or flakes of snow. Much of the north and west keeps brighter skies.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in the north to 5C (41F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight cloud cover should hold temperatures above freezing point in much of the country. However locally in the north and west clear intervals could allow frost to return. The chart shows forecast temperatures for early tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow wet weather pushes across Northern Ireland and reaches western Britain by the end of the day. Central and eastern counties remain dry but it is expected to be mostly overcast. The north has a raw day but in the south temperatures will be a couple of degrees up on today's values.

Through Wednesday a light and fragmenting band of rain spreads eastwards, but later on there is a risk of heavier bursts pushing into the south west. The south has quite a mild day but in the north it will be quite cold and snow is possible over high ground.

On Thursday a ridge of high pressure brings drier conditions. Cloud amounts are uncertain but there is a reasonable chance of some bright spells.

Atlantic attack!

Through Friday and the weekend a transitions back to unsettled weather is now favoured with all areas having wet and windy spells. Temperatures generally become close to the average but with a greater likelihood of cold incursions in the north and mild ones in the south.

The forecast chart below for Sunday shows weather systems from the west making inroads across the UK and an unsettled Atlantic based established.
