Free access to ECMWF based forecasts this Easter

With the run-up to the Easter period bringing a predictably mixed bag of UK weather, planning your bank holiday weekend could be tricky. To help you stay one step ahead of the showers, The Weather Outlook is giving you an Easter treat.

Premium forecasts

From now until the end of Easter Sunday, we are unlocking our premium ECMWF data-based forecasts, giving everyone completely free access for all UK locations, postcodes and geolocation searches.

Normally an exclusive feature for our premium members, these top tier forecasts are now available for all users to enjoy over the holiday weekend. No login needed. No registration required.

Why use the ECMWF data?

Our standard local forecasts are driven by the Global Forecast System (GFS), a widely used model. However, the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) model is statistically more accurate and is widely considered the gold standard for medium range forecasting. By switching to this data stream you get the best guidance available.

The ECMWF provide:

• Enhanced accuracy: The forecasts use interpolation to fine tune the data, improving accuracy for your specific UK location or postcode.

• Smarter rain probabilities: The percentage (%) chance of rain isn't just a simple output; it is calculated by analysing surrounding areas to assess the bigger picture, giving you a more realistic heads up on whether you'll need an umbrella for the Easter egg hunt.

How to switch to ECMWF based forecasts

Accessing our premier forecasts couldn't be easier.

1. Search for your chosen UK location, postcode, or use your device's geolocation as normal.

2. Look under the forecast panel and tap the ECMWF button to switch your data source.

The forecasts are presented in the exact same format you are already used to. They will look completely familiar, but the premium data source is powering the numbers behind the scenes.

Compare and switch back anytime

Want to see how the models compare? You have full control. You can switch back to the standard GFS forecasts at any time by selecting one of the other options located next to the ECMWF button under the forecast panel.
