Temperatures will be falling during the coming days and overnight lows of -10C are possible even in southern Britain later in the week. The cold period is expected to continue into next week and there will be snow in places. Tomorrow disruptive snow is likely in the northern half of Scotland. Forecast details for Thursday are uncertain, but there is a chance of a covering of snow in Wales as well as parts of southern and central England.
Tuesday starts with scattered showers in eastern England and Scotland where some of them are falling as snow. Elsewhere it is dry and in places there has been a frost.
Through the day showers continue in eastern counties and northern Scotland. In the north they start to turn wintry even at low levels. Scattered showers may also push into northern Wales, but other parts of the UK have a dry day. Sunny periods should form more widely than recently.
Cold. Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in the north to 7C (45F) near to the south coast. See the rain radar for the latest view.
Tonight showers continue to affect the same areas as during the day. However, more of them fall as snow and in northern Scotland significant accumulations are possible by the morning. Very cold with widespread frost.
Tomorrow snow showers become heavy and prolonged in the northern half of Scotland. Disruptive accumulations are expected. Wintry showers also continue near to the east coast and there could be a few in Northern Ireland. However, in much of the UK it will be dry, bright and very cold. In parts of the north temperatures may remain below 0C (32F).
Through Thursday a disturbance probably pushes southeastwards across Northern Ireland, Wales and southern England. In places it could produce a covering of snow. In the north and east there will be further snow showers. Other areas have a dry and bright day. Bitterly cold. In much of central and northern Britain temperatures struggle to reach 0C (32F). Widespread frost early and late, severe in places.
Friday is looking dry, bright and very cold in most of the UK. However, sleet or snow showers are expected in northern, eastern and western coastal counties country. Widespread frost early and late, severe in places.
The freezing conditions continue this weekend. Frost will be widespread and in places it persists through the days. Sleet or snow showers are most likely in the northern, eastern and western coastal counties, although there is a possibility of more organised bands pushing inland at times.
