Frosty day! Fog sitting on the hillside. Posted by Dizzy Daff

The meteorological winter starts today and through the coming days temperatures will be dipping as an easterly flow pulls in colder air from continental Europe. However, the real uncertainty begins next week with some computer models showing an increasing risk of snow. However, others are pointing towards low pressure and less cold air moving up from the south. The winter forecast will be issued today.

Thursday starts wet in Scotland and the far north of England. Elsewhere it is dry and it is foggy in places. Locally there has been a touch of frost.

Through the day outbreaks of rain in northern Britain become patchier and increasingly focused on eastern Scotland. Areas to the south and Northern Ireland will be mostly dry, although there could be a few showers in the south east. Fog gradually lifts and sunny intervals develop.

Temperatures range from 4C (39F) in the north to 10C (50F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight light outbreaks of rain affect north eastern Britain and the risk of showers in the south east remains. Other areas remain dry have a dry. Cloud prevents a widespread frost, although clear spells could allow temperatures to dip below freezing point in the Welsh valleys. Fog returns in places.

Tomorrow the risk of patchy rain continue in eastern and possibly southern Scotland. There could still be showers in the south east too, but in the rest of the UK it's a dry scene once again. Rather cold.

Cold outlook favoured

During Saturday outbreaks of rain and hill snow push into western Scotland and Northern Ireland. In the eastern half of Britain showers develop and over high ground they turn wintry. Cold.

Sunday is looking cold. In central and northern eastern parts of the UK there will be showers and over the hills they increasingly fall as sleet or snow. The south should be dry and bright. Feeling cold.

Forecast details for next week are uncertain. Some computer models are showing low pressure and milder air pushing up across the southern half of the UK whilst it remains colder in the north. Others are keeping it cold in all of the UK.
