Wet weather in early May. Posted by brian gaze

Much of the UK has showery rain today and temperatures stay well below the seasonal average. The next few days are set to bring more of the same and computer models are increasingly suggesting the chill will continue next week.

Tuesday begins with scattered showers and in the north east there are longer spells of rain, with snow falling over the mountains. Through the day heavy showery outbreaks of rain affect much of Northern Ireland, England and Wales. Parts of the south west, as well as the north, have longer dry periods. It will be windy and unseasonably cold.

Maximum temperatures range from 7C (45F) in the north to 13C (55F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Cold and unsettled

During Thursday outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across southern Britain. There is some uncertainty about their northern extent, but most probably stay to the south of London. Other areas have a good deal of dry and bright spells, but there will be showers in the north which could be wintry over the hills. Cold for early May.

Changeable and chilly weather is expected to continue through the rest of the week. There is a risk of heavy spells of rain pushing up from the southwest later on.
