The cold weather continues this weekend. Today there will be sunny spells and wintry showers with snow accumulating in places. Tomorrow more prolonged outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow push eastwards across southern and possibly central Britain. Accumulations of snow are likely even to low levels in places.

Saturday starts with wintry showers in northern and western areas. Elsewhere it is mainly dry and cold. Through the day there will be sunny spells but wintry showers become more widespread. and push eastwards across England. Many of them fall as snow and accumulations are possible in places.

Maximum temperatures range from 3C (37F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight wintry showers continue in western coastal counties. Elsewhere it should be dry and clear spells lead to a widespread frost. In the Scottish Glens temperatures could plunge to -12C (10F). By the end of the outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow reach the south west.

Tomorrow outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow push eastwards across southern and central Britain with brighter conditions following them. There is some uncertainty about the extent of the snow risk, but accumulations of several cms are possible over low ground and up to 10cms over hills. Areas to the north have sunny spells and wintry showers. Very cold in the snowy areas and cold generally.

Cold weekend

During Monday wintry showers continue in the northern half of the UK. In southern and central regions there is a low to moderate chance of a more organised band of sleet and snow showers clearing southwards through the morning. It remains cold.

Through Tuesday and Wednesday outbreaks of rain spread eastwards. On their leading edge they turn to sleet and snow in northern Britain. There is the potential for significant falls of snow. Milder conditions return to the south and west.

Thursday and Friday are looking mild in southern and central regions with an ongoing risk of rain. In the north it probably stays colder.
