The next few days bring a lot of quiet weather but there will be rain in the north today. If you're heading out on New Year's Eve it is looking mostly dry and quite chilly. Later in the week a period of wet and windy weather spreads southeastwards and colder air follows it from the northwest....READ IN FULL

Monday starts with rain in northern and western Scotland. Elsewhere it is dry and locally in the south there has been a ground frost. Through the day outbreaks of increasingly patchy rain spread southeastwards across the northern half of the UK. Brighter skies follow into Scotland this afternoon. Southern and central regions have a dry day with variable amounts of cloud.
Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in the far north to a very mild 14C (57F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the rain in northern England pushes southwards into central counties and steadily eases. Elsewhere it will be mainly dry and in the north clear spells lead to a frost in places.

Tomorrow showery rain pushes into the south west and thicker cloud brings damp conditions more widely to the south. The north should be dry and bright. During the evening cloud begins to break in southern counties to leave clear periods in all regions. It will be quite cold if you're heading out for New Year's Eve celebrations and in the north a frost is likely.

New Year's day is set to be dry in most of the country. After a cold start temperatures pick up and become close to the average in the afternoon. Outbreaks of rain may push into northern and western Scotland.
During Thursday outbreaks of rain spread across northern and western areas. The south and east should remain dry. It will be windy but mild. The wet weather pushes southeastwards overnight and through Friday. Colder conditions follow and in Scotland showers turn wintry.
Through the weekend high pressure builds in from the west. Saturday will be quite cold with frost early and late. On Sunday outbreaks of rain and milder air begin to return from the northwest.
Next week high pressure is expected to remain centred to the south of the UK. Southern counties should have a lot of dry and quite mild weather. In the north there is a greater risk of rain.
