Rain followed by heavy showers

Outbreaks of rain move away northeastwards today but heavy showers follow on. Tomorrow winds will be unusually strong winds in the southern half of the UK for mid August. Gusts are likely to exceed 50mph in exposed locations. The longer term outlook is mixed with the most settled conditions generally in the south....READ IN FULL

Friday starts wet in much of the UK. The heaviest outbreaks of rain are affecting northern England, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland. Through the day they move northeastwards clearing most areas apart from central and northern Scotland by the early afternoon. Brighter conditions follow but showers develop in the west. They become heavy and spread progressively eastwards.

Temperatures range from 16C (61F) in the far north to 24C (75F) in the south east and East Anglia. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight drier conditions return to Scotland. Elsewhere the showers steadily become confined to Wales, western England and Northern Ireland.

Winter 2019/20 weather [NEW]


Tomorrow showers return with the heaviest ones in central and northern regions. It will be very windy with gales in parts of England and Wales. Gusts in coastal counties of Wales and south west England could exceed 50mph. With trees in full leaf there is the potential for travel disruption.

Mixed outlook

Further heavy and thundery showers affect parts of northern Britain on Sunday. Southern and central areas have scattered showers but also a good deal of dry and bright periods. It will be less windy. In the south east and East Anglia it should feel pleasantly warm.

The mixed theme continues on Monday. Showers are most likely in central and northern areas. The south should be mainly dry and bright.  

Through the rest of next week it remains changeable. All regions have showers or longer spells of rain. There will be drier and brighter periods too with the best of them in the south.
