Unsettled and windy weather

[Updated 08:30 07/02/2019]

Windy weather

All regions have wet and windy weather during the next couple of days but there will be drier and brighter interludes too. This weekend the unsettled theme continues. Northern areas have wintry showers and in the south a period of rain and hill snow is a possibility. Next week it is set to turn more settled....READ IN FULL

Wednesday starts with heavy showery outbreaks of rain and hill snow in parts of the north. Across the south it's blustery with scattered showers and bright spells. This morning the wet weather in the north pulls away eastwards and it brightens up. Showers continue in the south and this afternoon thicker cloud builds northeastwards over much of England and Wales. Winds gradually ease.

Temperatures range from 4C (39F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) in the south. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight heavy outbreaks of rain spread northeastwards. Over the hills in Scotland they turn to snow and significant accumulations are possible. Winds strengthen again with gales returning to much of the west and south west.

Buzz

Tomorrow wet and windy weather affects most of the country. Gusts of between 50mph and 60mph are likely over inland areas and 70mph is possible in north western coastal counties. The stormy conditions lead to a likelihood of some travel disruption. A band of persistent rain pushes southeastwards and it is followed by a mix of sunny spells and heavy showers.

Mixed weekend on the way

The unsettled weather continues this weekend but colder air steadily filters southwards. The north has sunny spells and wintry showers with an increasing risk of snow. A small area of low pressure may push eastwards across the southern half of the UK and bring a risk of more persistent rain or wet snow. There is uncertainty but the snow risk currently looks greatest over high ground in central regions.

Next week starts cold with scattered wintry showers. A change is expected to quickly take place as high pressure builds across the UK and into the continent. It should lead to a good deal of dry weather.
