Often dry but colder in the New Year

[Updated 07:10 30/12/2018]

Daffodils

The weather has been very mild recently and in parts of the UK spring flowers are blossoming. The December Central England Temperature (CET) to the 28th is 2.2C above the 30 year average and the month is ending on a quiet note. The settled spell continues into the New Year but temperatures take a dip....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts mild and in the north east there are patchy outbreaks of rain. This morning the wet weather in the north east clears away but in western Britain drizzle is likely at times throughout the day. A lot of cloud lingers, however a few brighter spells are possible in the south and east.

It will be mild with temperatures between 10C (50F) to 12C (54F) in much of the UK. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow wet weather pushes into the north west and in other western counties thicker cloud brings drizzle. The rest of the country is expected to be dry and it stays mild. If you are heading out to see in the New Year the weather should not cause major problems, but in the north west there is a risk of rain.

High pressure holds into 2019

The benign spell of weather continues on New Year's day. Cloud could break more widely than it has in recent days and temperatures remain above the average for early January.

During the middle of the week high pressure builds northwards over the UK. Very cold air will be plunging southwards into  continental Europe but the core of it remains to our east. Nonetheless the mild southwesterly is expected to be cut off and temperatures will be significantly lower than they have been recently. There is uncertainty about cloud amounts but nighttime frosts probably become more widespread.
