The weather remains unsettled during the next few days with all areas having wet and windy periods. Next week it becomes drier for a time as high pressure builds over Scandinavia. However, low pressure areas in the the Atlantic are expected to quickly return and usher in another very unsettled period....READ IN FULL
Friday starts with heavy rain in much of England and Wales. Through the morning the wet weather pushes southeastwards and it is followed by the brighter conditions that have already reached the north west. By early afternoon the persistent outbreaks of rain should be clearing from the south eastern corner. In the west heavy showers develop and over high ground in Scotland they turn wintry. It will be a very windy generally and in the north west wind gusts of over 70mph are possible in exposed locations this morning.

Tonight showers continue in the north and west. Elsewhere it becomes mostly dry but it remains windy.

Tomorrow showery rain spread eastwards across much of the country, but the northern half of Scotland probably remains mostly dry. Winds gradually ease in the north but strengthen again in the south. The northern of the UK has a cold day but in the south it remains quite mild.

Through Sunday morning showery rain moves away southeastwards. In the afternoon scattered showers spread into the west and north but most places stay dry. The north has a chilly day but temperatures stay close to the seasonal average in the south.
Monday looks dry and quite cold in most of the UK. However there is a risk of outbreaks of rain in the north west and over high ground in Scotland they could turn to sleet or snow.
Through the middle of the week high pressure builds over Scandinavia. Colder air moves westwards across Europe but computer models are now suggesting it will struggle to reach the UK. The battle between the mild Atlantic air mass and the cold continental one may remain just to our east.
The second half of the week is looking very unsettled and there is the potential for some big rainfall totals to be recorded. Temperatures probably fluctuate around the mid December average with snow restricted to high ground in Scotland.
