[Updated 07:10 04/12/2018]

Wintry scene

The outlook for the rest of the week is an unsettled one with heavy rain and strong winds bringing the risk of disruption a times. It will often be mild but by the end of the week colder air in the north begins to push southwards. Next week it looks as though a cold easterly flow will become established over the UK as high pressure build over Scandinavia.....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with showers in the north west of the UK. Elsewhere it is dry and there has been a widespread frost overnight. This morning sunny spells develop in Scotland but showers continue. In other areas cloud builds and this afternoon rain spreads into the south west.

It will be quite cold. Temperatures range from 4C (39F) in Scotland to 9C (48F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 forecast [Issued 01/12/2018]

Tomorrow wet weather is expected in much of the country but northern Scotland should stay mainly dry. On northern hills outbreaks of rain turn to snow and significant accumulations are possible over higher parts of the Pennines. Across the south the rain may become patchier at times and later on drier conditions begin to return from the west. In the south it will be windy but also a lot milder than today.

Unsettled at first then colder

Thursday brings further outbreaks of rain to Scotland and Northern Ireland. The southern half of the UK probably has a dry start but rain is pushes in from the west through the day.

Unsettled weather continues through the rest of the week. During Thursday night and Friday it becomes stormy with gales or severe gales in the west. Some computer models are predicting wind gusts of between 70mph and 80mph in exposed parts of the north west. Heavy rain will be an additional hazard in much of the UK and travel disruption is possible.

Wet and windy conditions are likely on Saturday. By Sunday a change begins to take place as high pressure forms to the west of the UK and colder air pushes southwards. Next week a cold easterly flow may become established over the UK as the high pressure area builds over Scandinavia.
