Friday is off to a cold and frosty start in much of the country. All areas have sunny periods this morning but in the afternoon it becomes cloudier in the north and west. Winds strengthen in the north west of the UK and by the evening outbreaks of rain spread into Northern Ireland.

Afternoon temperatures range from 7C (45F) in northern Scotland to 12C (54F) in southern England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight wet and windy weather spreads across Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales. Southern and central areas remain dry.

Tomorrow heavy rain affects much of the north and west but the south and east of England should be dry. It will be windy in all regions, but particularly in exposed parts of the west. The strong winds could cause problems for those of you planning fireworks parties, and in the north west the likelihood of rain is an additional consideration.

On Sunday the band of wet weather steadily pushes southeastwards. Initially the outbreaks of rain on it becomes but during the afternoon heavier and more persistent outbreaks are expected to move northeastwards.

Next week's weather

The longer term prospects are mixed. All regions have rain at times but the south and east could have quite a lot of dry weather as high pressure over the continent slows the eastwards progression of Atlantic disturbances. Temperatures will generally be close to the seasonal average but in the south it could be milder.
