Rain slowly easing off today

[Updated 07:00 15/10/2018]

The new working week starts on a mixed note with showery outbreaks of rain in parts of England. During the next few days high pressure builds and the weather becomes more settled in the south. Things probably change very little through the second half of the week....READ IN FULL

Monday begins with showery outbreaks of rain in England but elsewhere it is mainly dry. This morning rain continues to affect southern and central areas, and at times it could be heavy. In the afternoon the rain becomes lighter and increasingly confined to eastern England. Wales, Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland have sunny periods but in the far north west there will be some showers.

The south eastern corner will still be sitting under a warm upper level air mass so temperatures could reach 18C (64F). Elsewhere values range from 7C (45F) in the far north to 13C (55F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight cloud builds across the northern half of the UK and the remnants of today's rain filter northwards. Later in the night some clear spells could form in southern counties.

Tomorrow morning a band of rain pushes eastwards across Northern Ireland. During the afternoon the wet weather spreads into western parts of Britain. Elsewhere it will be dry with sunny spells. Temperatures will be higher than today's and in East Anglia they could reach 22C (72F).

Mixed next week

Wednesday sees the outbreaks of rain slowly spreading southeastwards into central areas, but they become patchy. Ahead of them it will be quite warm again. Temperatures remain close to the seasonal average in the north and west.

Through Thursday and Friday high pressure becomes the dominant feature of the UK's weather. That means most of the country can expect it to be dry with sunny spells and close to average temperatures. In Scotland there is a greater risk of Atlantic disturbances bringing rain.

At this stage the weekend is looking fine in the southern half of the UK. The north probably remains more changeable and on Sunday a band of rain may begin to push southeastwards.
