Rewind to summer today

[Updated 08:20 10/10/2018]

Suns shining through trees

Most of the country stays fine and warm today but the outlook for the rest of the week is mixed. Areas of low pressure in the Atlantic are set to bring very wet and windy periods, particularly to the west. In the south and east some rain is likely but there will be more emphasis on drier and warmer conditions....READ IN FULL

Wednesday starts dry across the UK. This morning early mist clears and sunny spells develop widely. Through the afternoon it remains fine in most of the country, but in the south west thicker cloud could bring some showery rain by the early evening.

It will be very warm for October. Temperatures this afternoon range from 17C (63F) in Scotland to about 24C (75F) in England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 2

Tonight a band of showery rain pushes northeastwards. By the morning it is expected to stretch from Northern Ireland down into East Anglia. To the south and north it will be mainly dry.

Tomorrow the showery rain moves away northwards and warm spells of sunshine develop in the south. In the south west further outbreaks of rain develop and during the course of the day they spread northeastwards across most of the country. In the south they are expected to be quite patchy.

More changeable later this week

On Friday rain affects most of the UK. It will also be windy and severe gales are likely in the north west with gusts in  exposed coastal locations possibly reaching 80mph. In eastern areas the rain is expected to be patchier. Ahead of the wet weather it will be quite warm.

This weekend is looking changeable but there is uncertainty about the balance between  high pressure centred over the continent and low pressure areas in the Atlantic. Western areas have a wet and windy Saturday but the east may stay mostly dry. In any sunny spells that develop it will be warm. Overnight and into Sunday the rain clears eastwards and is followed by brighter and cooler conditions.

Mixed next week?

At this stage changeable weather is favoured next week. The wettest spells are likely to be in the north west with drier periods more frequent in the south east. Temperatures probably stay be close for much of the period but it could be chilly in the north at times.
