[Updated 07:10 07/08/2018]

Lightning strikes

Cooler conditions will return to southern counties by tomorrow and the next few days are looking changeable. By the weekend it becomes more unsettled and all areas could have a spell of wet and windy weather. Next week high pressure could return....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with patchy rain in the north but southern and central regions are fine. Through the day light rain continues to be a risk in the north and it slowly edges southeastwards. Southern and central regions have hot sunny spells but this afternoon thunderstorms develop across the south east and torrential downpours are possible. There will be a lot of cloud in the north but clearer skies probably return to western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures range from 15C (59F) in western Scotland to 33C (91F) in East Anglia and the south eastern corner. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight the thunderstorms in the south east gradually fade away. Elsewhere it will be mostly dry but in northern and central areas there could be some light rain. Muggy in the south east but much fresher in the north and west.

Rain risk increases

On Thursday most of the UK has a fresh and breezy day with sunshine and showers. In the south east a period of more prolonged rain is possible as an area of low pressure deepens over France and the Benelux countries. However there is uncertainty about how far north and west the wet weather will extend.

Friday brings a mix of sunshine and showers. The majority of the showers will be in the north and west, and the south east has a good deal of dry weather. Temperatures in the south east peak at close to 23C (73F).

During the weekend a deep area of low pressure pushes in from the Atlantic  leading to spells of wet and windy weather. On Saturday the rain could be mainly in the north and west with central and south eastern counties remaining drier.  Overnight and during Sunday the rain sweeps southeastwards and is followed by sunny spells and blustery showers.

Next week probably begins quite unsettled. Later on there are indications that it will turn drier and warmer as high pressure returns.
