Bank Holiday bangers for some

[Updated 07:15 25/05/2018]

Lightning

The Bank Holiday weekend prospects are mixed with low pressure centred over France having more influence on our weather than was looking likely a few days ago. There will be fine periods but the risk of cloudbursts continues in the southern half of the country.

Friday starts with heavy rain in central England and Wales. Through the day the wet weather steadily spreads northwards and reaches the Scottish borders by the early evening. In southern counties it turns drier and some warm sunny spells develop, but Wales and the south west remain cloudier with patchy rain. Scotland and Northern have a dry day with sunny periods.

Temperatures in the wet areas won't climb much above 15C (59F) but in sunny parts of the south and north values of 21C (70F) or higher are possible. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the rain in the north becomes patchier and gradually fades away. Central areas will be mostly dry but in the south another batch of thundery showers pushes in from the near continent by the morning.

Tomorrow any remnants of the overnight rain in the north should fade away to leave warm sunny spells. In the south downpours are expected with the focus of them being on Wales, the south west and central southern England. To the east some warm periods of sunshine develop and temperatures reach a humid 25C (77F).

Sunday brings warm sunny periods to much of the country, however thunderstorms affect southern and central counties. Again they are thought to be most likely in central and western parts of the south.

The details for Bank Holiday Monday are uncertain. Most places should have a warm or even hot day but thunderstorms remain a possibility. Temperatures in the south could reach 29C (84F) but that is dependent on long periods of sunshine developing.

Warmth continues next week

The very warm weather continues on Tuesday and Wednesday but the risk of thundery showers persists in the south. At this stage changes through the second half of the week are expected to be slow. However forecast confidence is low with computer models split between showing high pressure gradually building back and low pressure deepening close to the UK.
