The thaw spreads northwards

[Updated 08:50 04/03/2018]

Melting snow on a bench

Milder air is pushing northwards and in most of the country the thaw of lying snow will continue today. The week ahead is looking cool and showery with the risk of snow mostly becoming confined to high ground in the north.

Sunday begins less cold than recent mornings but in the north temperatures are hovering around 0C (32F). This morning showery rain affects central and western areas. In the north showers continue to bring a mix of sleet and snow. Southern counties have murky and damp conditions.

This afternoon showers are likely almost anywhere and in Scotland it will remain be cold enough for snow. The precipitation forecast chart below gives an indication of the picture at 3pm.

Temperatures in most of the country will be several degrees above freezing point so quite a rapid thaw of lying snow continues. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight showery rain continues in the west and north with snow over the Scottish hills. Elsewhere it should become mostly dry and cloud breaks could lead to a touch of frost in places.

Mixed but less cold week ahead

Tomorrow wet weather pushes northwards across western and central regions, and in northern Scotland outbreaks of snow are likely. Elsewhere it should be mostly dry. Temperatures remain below average for the time of year but the thaw continues.

Low pressure is expected to remain over the UK for much of next week. That means the UK remains under a cool and showery air mass. In the north it remains cold enough for snow over high ground and possibly down to lower levels at times but temperatures in the south will be closer to the early March average.
