Mixed and very mild weekend

[Updated 07:20 27/01/2018]

Umbrellas

The weekend will bring mixed but very mild weather to most of the UK. Early next week temperatures dip and there continues to be a chance of a much colder period of weather developing during the first half of February.

...READ IN FULL

Saturday begins wet in northern and western Britain. Eastern areas are mostly dry and the overnight rain has eased off in Northern Ireland. Through the day outbreaks of rain steadily push southeastwards but they become patchier. Brighter conditions follow on but blustery showers develop in the north west.

Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

This evening the remnants of the rain pull away from the south eastern corner. Showery rain continues in the north west and wet conditions spread more widely across the north and west during the night. It will be very windy in Scotland with severe gales in the far north.

Tomorrow damp weather affects much of the north and west with more prolonged outbreaks of rain likely at times in the north west. The east should be drier and in the south some bright spells are possible. All regions have a very mild day and temperatures could push towards 15C (59F) in sunny intervals.

Changeable start to next week

On Monday outbreaks of rain push southeastwards. Colder air follows on behind and wintry showers develop in the north. During Tuesday outbreaks of rain may move eastwards across southern counties but central and northern areas should be mostly dry and chilly.

During Tuesday night and Wednesday morning  wet weather spreads southeastwards. Colder and showery conditions return as it clears away.

Looking into February

The outlook for the first half of February is very uncertain. Some computer models continue to show the possibility of it turning much colder as high pressure builds over Scandinavia and very cold air filters across continental Europe and into the UK. That weather pattern has been very rare in recent decades, so until the major computer models are in agreement and the time frame is shorter confidence in it happening will be low.
