Sunday starts with light rain in the north western England and southern Scotland. Elsewhere it is dry and this morning sunny spells develop quite widely across the southern half of the UK. Through the afternoon thicker cloud in the north steadily spreads southwards. In the north west of the UK outbreaks of rain develop and winds strengthen.

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) to 7C (45F). See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight wet and windy weather pushes southeastwards. Clearer and showery conditions follow from the north west.

Tomorrow morning the rain gradually clears away from the south east to leave all regions with a mix of sunshine and showers. It will be quite cold and in the north showers turn increasingly wintry.

Mid-week mayhem possible

Tuesday brings quite cold conditions with sunny spells and wintry showers. In the north and west they become heavy and frequent with snow at times. Accumulations are possible in the north over low ground and over the hills in central Britain.

Wednesday starts cold and showery. During the second half of the day a disturbance in the flow is expected to begin pushing in from the Atlantic. There is uncertainty about its path but recent computer model runs have it heading across the north of the UK. If that is correct there is a risk of heavy rain and stormy conditions affecting much of the UK. Snow would be mostly restricted to high ground in the north.

The GFS chart below shows forecast wind gusts for 03:00 GMT on Thursday.  You can check the latest winds gust charts using the GFS chart viewer and the Meteo France Arpege chart viewer.

Cold and showery conditions return after the disturbance moves away eastwards on Thursday. Beyond next weekend there are indications of milder air beginning to push in from the southwest.
